In this 'open practice' video, Utah's Beth Launiere discusses practice plans and goals with her team while reminding her players that they can only control what they can control. By focusing on hard work and the competitive mindset, Coach Launiere reminds her players that they must improve their disciplined habits at all times when on the court. You'll learn how to do the same with your team and build a better team this season!

Blocking Drills

Coach Launiere uses multiple drills with a focus on blocking strategy and technique. In-system and out-of-system scenarios are presented that challenge players to make split-second blocking decisions. Launiere emphasizes the mindfulness of the first step when executing a block. Through repetitive drill work, players focus on getting their feet in place in order to cover more of the court with a solid block.

In-System vs. Out-of-System Drills

Coach Launiere challenges her players to be as productive out-of-system as they are when they are in-system. She encourages athletes to "tell me what you are seeing so I know what you are seeing" on the court. By communicating at a higher level, drill work can be run at a game-speed pace. Drills like the 5-5-5 Kill Drill will force your team to become more comfortable using a back row attack option while also increasing their transition game.

Situational Drills

In the Situational Wash Table Drill, you will see how Launiere encourages her team to better the ball in chaotic court situations. You will learn how eye work and communication can change the level of play during the most stressful times on the court. Players are encouraged to challenge each other to bring out the best in one another. Coach Launiere asks for player input as to what they want to work on in this situational drill and then weaves that feedback into the drill work.

Throughout this video, Coach Launiere stresses mindful execution of all fundamental skills. The drills presented in this practice session can be put into place on your court to fit into your practice plans immediately!
